COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

OVM invites the community to engage with issues of justice and incarceration. In addition to our programs at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility, we offer many ways for local groups to reach out to incarcerated individuals.

Community Engagement opportunities include

• Presentation of our programs for your church, school, or group
• Valentine's Day letters
• Special events offered throughout the year

Death Row Pen Pal Project

OVM invites the community, in partnership with Death Row Support Project, to engage inmates through a Pen Pal experience.  Even in Covid-19 times, community members have the opportunity to act with restorative practices by corresponding with an inmate on death row.

[My M-2 volunteer] remembers things that we talked about during our monthly visits, things like my children's names, discussions about different family members, and the struggles we face. He remembers books that I told him were extremely influential in helping me become a better person! My own family doesn't care about such things. To choose those things to matter to him, I realize, is a choice which makes all the difference in the world to me!

M-2 PROGRAM

M-2 is a partnership program with Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) that "matches two" - a volunteer from the community with someone in prison - for monthly visits. Since 1973, M-2 has helped to build relationships between folks on the inside and outside of prison walls. Sponsors and participants meet for an hour and half to talk, share food and encouragement. This simple act of connection demonstrates that all are made in the image of God and worthy of relationship and support.

PRISON ARTS

OVM provides a variety of creative programs at HCF. In an environment that is often monotonous and stressful, these programs provide a creative outlet for self-expression to help rebuild self-esteem and promote a sense of connection with the community. They can also be a restorative opportunity to bring about accountability and growth among participants. Programs are volunteer run and exist because of people on the outside and inside joining their shared passions for music, art, drama, and more.
